Joseph Smigielski is a Detroit native who received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Wayne State University in 1994.
He began his career teaching art to elementary school students whose spirit, he acknowledges gratefully, continues to have an influence on his work.
Besides his former students, Joe’s influences include Chagall, Kandinsky, Frank Zappa, and John Coltrane.
Joe began supporting himself solely through sales of his artwork in 2000 and moved to Chicago in 2003 where he lives and paints today.
Exhibits and sales of his artwork can be found in galleries, showrooms, hotels, cafes and retail outlets in Chicago, Colorado, Detroit and Georgia.
Joe is a sought after commission painter. Novalar Pharmaceuticals honored Joe in 2009 by asking him to create an original piece to celebrate their success during a festive event at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, and to add several of his paintings to their corporate collection in San Francisco.
