Ceramics & Found Object Assemblages-About The Work

As a long-term survivor of cancer, Heather is drawn to materials with which she can express degeneration, change and adaptation. All are involved in recovering from a life changing illness. They are tools for maintaining the human condition.

She works in ceramics and found object assemblage. Objects convey stories of human experience. Clay can be formed, reshaped, destroyed and formed again. It can be infinitely recycled in its green state. Yet, once fired, it is as fragile and non-renewable as human life.

It is a process of creating that reflects the way we construct our identities as unique beings. We behave as collectors- storing away the faces, places, smells, feelings and ideas from life that we use to sculpt the self.

Clay is part of the earth, the source and supplier of life. All fiber grows from it and so our lives are impacted by the fiber that clothes, feeds and connects the world.
